The Legend of Mollyockett

by Joe Perham

At Trap Corner in West Paris on the Mollyockett trail
you will find this old Maine legend truly does prevail.
In the valley Androscoggin, Little River to the west,
lived a Pequaket Indian princess, seldom known to stop and rest.
Always travelin', ever wanderin', straight of back and always bold,
tribal funds she carried with her - Mollyockett carried gold.
'Til the night came tired and hungry, cold and lonely, Molly knew
that she must bury all her treasure and find food and shelter, too.
Hangin' beartraps o'er the treasure to an inn she made her way
but the owners turned her from them, at the inn she could not stay.
Thereupon our Indian princess laid a curse upon the land.
Fire upon the inn did follow, nevermore it's walls would stand.
To the Hamlin home she wandered, there to find both food and rest.
Cured a baby of its sickness, then both home & child she blessed.
And the baby, Hannibal Hamlin, grew in years became a man.
Friend to president Abraham Lincoln, and Vice President of our land.
So according to a legend Molly's treasure ne'r was found,
but beneath the stately pine trees still lies buried in the ground.
At Trap Corner in West Paris on the Mollyockett trail
you will find this old Maine legend truly does prevail.
